SB Melanin was created to bring Santa Barbara’s Black community together in spaces that feel like home. Our mission is simple: connection, celebration, and culture. We believe community is built through shared moments—over music, food, conversation, and joy. SB Melanin is where we come together, uplift one another, and create memories that last.
At SB Melanin, we curate unique experiences that strengthen community and enrich the cultural ecosystem for people of color in Santa Barbara. Every event is crafted with intention—whether it’s a mixer, celebration, or gathering—to spark connection, expand networks, and spread joy.
We’re more than events—we’re a movement of togetherness and resilience.
History
SB Melanin is rooted in the legacy of the Santa Barbara Young Black Professionals (SBYBP), an organization dedicated to creating and fostering positive relationships that empowered young Black professionals in our community. For six years, SBYBP brought people together through professional development, social enrichment, and community service.
When SBYBP paused and eventually disbanded in 2022, its absence left a noticeable gap in our cultural and social landscape. I’m Jewels, and I had the honor of serving on the board of SBYBP. I wanted to carry forward the spirit of what we built—while expanding it into something more inclusive.
SB Melanin was born from that vision: a community space that honors our past while welcoming all ages and stages of life. By creating spaces that feel like home, SB Melanin continues the work of connection, empowerment, and celebration for the entire Santa Barbara Black community.
